In 2017, Business for a Better Portland launched a new kind of business organization that unites business leaders from companies of all sizes and sectors who recognize that economic success is tied to the success of the entire community.

BBPDX leverages the voice of Portland businesses to increase political access, foster connections, build wealth, and help everyone in our community to thrive.

History

In 2016, our founders organized to help preserve the stories of the Vanport Flood. The call-to-action raised awareness among the local business community about racial justice in Portland and helped Vanport Mosaic raise over $8,000.

This effort sparked a promising formula for success and engagement: businesses collaborating with community leaders and organizers to support the vision of Portland's future we all wish to see.

Thus emerged a volunteer-led organization called the Portland Independent Chamber of Commerce (PICOC), which helped raise money and mobilize support for a number of causes and projects with monthly calls-to-action. When we formalized the organization 12 months later, we changed our name to Business for a Better Portland.

As we learned more about Portland’s political structures past and present, we have sought to impact the root causes of inequity by providing a fresh and holistic economic perspective in public policy conversations in these focus areas: housing and homelessness, transportation and economic opportunity.

“As a developer of affordable housing communities, we’re impressed with the ways in which  Business for a Better Portland shows up in the housing advocacy arena. It’s clear that BBPDX understands that affordable housing is key to a thriving, active, and sustainable city for neighborhoods across Portland.”
